Black Caps suffer snaps bat in half during loss to Australia

Colin Munro won’t be lacking for firewood next winter after his bat snapped in half as he tried to hit a 143km/h thunderbolt from Pat Cummins.

While attempting to play the ball through the off side, Munro’s bat couldn’t take the strain and broke clean in half.

In scenes reminiscent of Englishman Michael Carberry at the same ground during an Ashes Test in 2014, Munro signalled to the change rooms for some replacement lumber.

The recent spike in breakages is down to advancement in bat technology.

With the English willow being dried out much more in recent years, meaning there is more wood in the blade but less weight, which obviously means the ball travels further when struck but makes the bats particularly brittle.

In the end Munro was dismissed for 49 as the Black Caps went down by 68 runs.
