Johan Botha has unbelievably broken his bat on his first ball as he unloaded on a Mark Steketee delivery late in the Hurricanes’ innings.

The Tasmanians got off to a flying start as Big Bash heavyweight D’arcy Short slogged an impressive 67 off the Brisbane Heat attack before he was caught out by Ben Cutting.

Botha set about continuing his predecessor's work when he was summoned to the crease late but was foiled by the most unlikely of obstacles, his own bat.

Unloading on a wider deliver from Steketee in a final runs push, Botha shattered his bat in two as pieces of willow went flying down the pitch.

“He’s broken his bat, he’s busted in half!” FOX Cricket commentator Mark Howard exclaimed.

“I think it’s pretty obvious as he signals toward the sheds that he needs a new one.”

Eariler, George Bailey and Ben McDermott put together a handy partnership for the Hurricanes before he was caught out by Heazlett off the bowling of Lalor.
