'Not what we had hoped': Sixers suffer cruel blow as Daniel Hughes ruled out of Big Bash season

Sydney Sixers star Daniel Hughes has been ruled out for the Big Bash season after suffering an elbow injury in the club's five-wicket victory over the Melbourne Renegades.

Hughes aggravated a lingering elbow injury while attempting a one-handed dive off a shot from Tim Siefert in the 16th over.

The 35-year-old was forced out of action for an extended period earlier this year due to an elbow injury, which he first suffered while playing club cricket for the Easts Dolphins.

Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes confirmed the injury diagnosis in a statement.

"While the news is not what we had hoped for Daniel, and we're obviously incredibly disappointed to lose him for the remainder of this season, we know that he'll commit himself to his rehab over the coming months, just as he did earlier in the year," she said.

"A pleasing aspect of our group is that we have players ready to step up at any time and we know that whoever comes into the side will be prepared to play their role.

"Regardless of if he's on the field or not, Daniel remains a core part of our group, and we'll wrap our arms around him in the weeks ahead."

During the game, the spirits of the veteran star were not dampened by the injury concern, having sat on the sidelines with his pads on while icing his elbow in case his team required him to drop in.

"He was a little bit sore. He had some ice on it," Ben Dwarshuis said post-match.

"But he had his pads on at the end there... we just have to wait for the scans tomorrow."

Hughes' services in the batting were not required though, with the hosts completing a strong chase to claim victory.
