Banned Australian cricketer David Warner to captain Canada T20 side

Banned Australia cricketer David Warner is set to return to captaincy in the Global T20 Canada league.

Part of Warner's punishment following the ball-tampering row was that he would never be considered for an Australia leadership position again.

But Warner, who was banned from international and domestic state cricket for 12 months by Cricket Australia, will replace the injured Dwayne Bravo at the head of the Hawks set-up.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis, who is coaching the Hawks, backed the opening batsman to add valuable experience in his new role.

"I'm sure he's going to be a good leader when it comes to captaincy," Younis was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

"Warner is a leader. He's a team man. I've seen him in the Indian Premier League and I've seen him as a leader. He's up there, he's up front, and he likes to give whatever his knowledge is."

The 31-year-old has failed to fire with the bat so far in the tournament, however, having scored just six runs in three innings.

But his team are currently on top with two wins out of three games.
