Aussies wear black armbands for Luke Batty

As a mark of respect for murdered Victorian schoolboy Luke Batty, the Australian cricket team wore black arm bands on the second day of the first Test match in South Africa.

Luke was killed by his father on Wednesday night while the young boy was at cricket training in the Mornington Peninsula.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann said the team was shocked by Luke's violent death and led the tributes to the 11-year-old from Tyabb Cricket Club.

"It's obviously a tragic set of events and utterly devastating for the people of Tyabb, especially the Tyabb Cricket Club," Lehmann said.

"Like everyone in the cricket community, we were shocked by the news. We're obviously a long way from home but wanted to show our support and care for those affected.

"Our hearts go out to Luke's family, in particular his mother Rosie, his mates and everyone at the Tyabb Cricket Club."

Luke was playing with his estranged father, Gregory Anderson, when the attack happened at the Tyabb cricket ground, the only place the two were allowed to spend time together due to an intervention order in place.

Anderson, of Chelsea Heights in Melbourne, was shot by police as officers arrived at the oval and later died in hospital.

The Tyabb club has cancelled all matches this weekend as a sign of respect for the young victim.
