Irish commentators go bonkers over amazing relay race

When it comes to sports coverage commentators can make or break the viewing experience.

And two Irish callers have proved that ethos with one of the most hilariously frantic pieces of commentary ever heard during a women's 4x400m relay race.

In an event that included a remarkable come-from-behind victory, the pair completely lose it on the final leg as the runners hit the last bend and sprint down the home straight, delivering some classic lines in their rich Irish brogue.

The call came during the relay at the Irish Universities Athletics Association Championships with University College Dublin (UCD) appearing to have the race sewn up with a 30m lead at the beginning of the final lap.

But just as the commentators begin to turn their attention to the battle for second between Ulster University (UL) and Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), UL closes the gap and takes the lead to the joy of the two callers.

However, the excitement then goes into overdrive as University Cork College (UCC) runner Phil Healy makes her move to power towards her rivals.

"UCC from the depth of hell are powering through," yells caller Cathal Dennehy.

Then, with the field sprinting down the straight, the commentators can barely contain themselves, screaming into the microphone in jubilation as Healy powers down the outside and passes a "dead" Finn just metres from the finish line.

The 21-year-old eventually collapses and face plants the track as she seals a remarkable victory.

Footage of the race has since gone viral with over 74,000 views and Healy widely hailed for her never-say-die win.

And while the finish line fall looked painful, Healy later posted that she was okay, apart from a few grazes.

But we're sure the sting was well and truly eased by the stunning result. What a race.
