The relief in Paul Gallen's voice was clear when he fronted the media after beating Sonny Bill Williams.

Throughout an entertaining boxing career, he's taken on some of the biggest names in Australia, which include Justis Huni and Lucas Browne.

And despite Gallen being motivated by his own determination, there was one person who inspired his victory against Williams on Wednesday night: Phil Gould.

"Do you know what I'm most happy with today? Gus Gould backed Sonny Bill Williams," he said.

"Let me tell you now, there's not a single person or single thing that someone can say that's going to motivate me more than I motivate myself but every now and then I'm happy to say up yours.

"Gus, up yours. Got him. It's probably the only time I'll get him to be fair but thankfully I got the win."

Gallen's win came in controversial circumstances, with Australian boxing great Danny Green strongly believing Williams should have won.

The New Zealander was undoubtedly the strongest across the first two rounds, landing a number of heavy blows.

But Gallen's endurance was on show. However, the former Sharks captain couldn't believe his rival stopped some of his early tactics.

"I'm lucky I've got a pretty hard forehead, he landed a straight right hand, it hit me hard. There was a 106 kilos behind it," he said.

"And then he hit me with two or three uppercuts and I don't know why he didn't keep throwing them.

"He stopped throwing the uppercut and that's why I wasn't trying to go to the head, I kept hitting the body and I was safe with my head out that way.

"So I kept hitting his body and they were scoring shots. I was getting those shots in ... but he stopped throwing uppercuts and I don't know why. He probably missed his opportunity there."
