Tim Tszyu is poised to become the WBO super-welterweight world champion on September 30, taking hold of the mantle from Jermell Charlo when the American sets foot in the ring to meet Mexico's Canelo Alvarez.

The WBO announced on Thursday that Charlo would be stripped of the title when he takes on Alvarez in Las Vegas.

It means Tszyu, being the interim WBO champion, will be promoted to full champion status.

It also means the Australian's next fight shapes as a world-title defence, likely against interim WBC champion Brian Mendoza of America.

Tszyu's last three bouts have seen him defeat American Terrell Gausha on his US debut, American Tony Harrison in Sydney and Mexican Carlos Ocampo on the Gold Coast.

He overcame Ocampo via KO on June 18 in his most recent clash.

It was announced on Thursday that his younger brother Nikita Tszyu would square off with Jack Brubaker in a super-welterweight battle at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion on August 23.
