Anthony Mundine makes surprise admission as son closes in on professional boxing debut

Despite the fame and millions of dollars boxing brought Anthony Mundine over a 21-year period, the former world champion has revealed he's against his son stepping into the ring.

Mundine's son Rahim will make his professional boxing debut on the undercard of the heavyweight bout between Sonny Bill Williams and Barry Hall in Sydney on March 23.

Just like his grandfather Tony predominantly in the 1970s and his dad Anthony from the year 2000, Rahim is set to chase boxing glory.

"If I had my way I wouldn't want him to do it," Mundine admitted on Sydney's 9News.

"It's a gruelling sport and a hard sport.

"But you can't deny their passions."

Having accepted that Rahim is pursuing the boxing dream, Mundine said he had great hopes for his son.

"I wanted to aspire to be as good as him or better than him," Mundine said of his dad, "and I want the same for my boy; I want him to be as good as me or better than me."

Rahim says being a Mundine doesn't faze him.

"For some others it might be hard, but this is all I know," Rahim said.

"I know what the big lights are. I've been around them my whole life, so nothing new, really.

"There's probably expectations ... and pressure, but pressure makes diamonds."

Mundine was called 'The Man' and his son has a nickname of his own.

"I'm 'The Dream' – 'Rahim the Dream'."
