Australian musician Cody Simpson has failed to show up for his heat at the Australian swimming national championships.

Simpson was scheduled to swim in the 100m butterfly but chose not to compete in the second heat after recently coming out of quarantine in Darwin.

There's still a chance he will swim in the 50 metre butterfly today in the non-Olympic meet.

The 23-year-old has been training on the Gold Coast in his attempt to make the Olympic team after returning from the US alongside former Olympian Brett Hawke.

On Thursday he was seen chatting with Australian Olympic legend Ian Thorpe poolside.

Simpson has returned to the sport after giving it away at a young age to pursue a music career.

He shocked swimming purists last year after easily qualifying for the 100m Butterfly with a time of 54.9 seconds. The qualifying time was 56.87 seconds.

Simpson decided to capitalise on the Olympics being postponed a year due to the COVID pandemic and will compete in the trials in Adelaide this June in an attempt to make the final squad for Japan.

Many big names have opted to give the Australian Swimming Championships a miss, with Olympic gold medallist Mack Horton and Kyle Chalmers also pulling out of heats on Friday.
