Australian sprint queen Torrie Lewis has shattered her own Australian 100m record just days out from the Commonwealth Games.

Six days before the athletics program begins in Glasgow, Australia’s fastest woman stopped the clock at 11.04 (+1.8) at a small meeting in Banská Bystrica, in central Slovakia. The time is 0.04 faster than the previous best she set at last year’s world championships in Tokyo.

And if that wasn’t enough, Lewis returned hours later to win the 200m event in 22.66.

The performance will come as a timely confidence-booster for the 21-year-old, who has been dogged by a niggling Achilles injury for much of this season.

It’s the second year in a row Lewis has enjoyed success at the meeting.

When the athletics program gets underway in Glasgow next week, Lewis will be among the busiest Aussie athletes. She is scheduled to compete in the 100m, 200m, and is also in the 4x100m relay team.

Lewis wasn’t the only Aussie who enjoyed success in Slovakia.

Claudia Hollingsworth came agonisingly close to going sub-2mins on her way to victory in the 800m (2:00.34). Luke Boyes (1:44.87) finished third in the men’s 800m, with Peyton Craig (1:45.65) sixth.

Commonwealth Games action begins at a leisurely pace on Thursday evening (AEST) with lawn bowls, ahead of the Opening Ceremony on Friday morning (AEST).
