The Australian athletics community is mourning the loss of 21-year-old middle-distance runner Natasha Ward. Her death was announced by NSW Athletics and the Sutherland District Athletics Club.
The young athlete mostly competed in 400m, 800m and 1500m events, with the runner recently racing at the 2024 Australian Championships alongside notable names such as Morgan Mitchell and Claudia Hollingsworth.

Ward showed immense promise as a young athlete, scoring medals in the 1500m at the NSW All Schools championships as a junior.
Ward was also successful in her university career, winning a 1500m medal at the 2023 UniSport Nationals and claiming a national bronze in the 800m in April of this year.
Ward’s passing is a blow to a community still reeling from another recent tragedy.
Just weeks ago, 25-year-old Australian runner Jemma Stapleton died in a scooter accident in Thailand. The Stawell Gift finalist suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene when her vehicle slid into oncoming traffic on a slippery road.
In a tribute shared on social media, Sutherland Athletics Club remembered Ward’s impact both on and off the track.
“Beyond her achievements on the track, Natasha was a greatly loved member of our community,” the club said on social media.
“Her kindness and joy touched everyone fortunate enough to know her, and her magnetic smile and warm personality have left a permanent mark on Australian athletics. Natasha’s enthusiasm and determination inspired her training partners.
“Our thoughts are with Natasha’s family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. RIP Natasha.”
