'Deep sorrow': Elite Ethiopian marathon runner dies after falling ill while training

Elite Ethiopian distance runner Shewarge Alene has died at the age of just 30 after falling ill during a training session.

Sweden's Stockholm Marathon, which Alene won in May, said on social media on Thursday that it had received the news with "deep sorrow".

"Shewarge Alene became unwell during a training session and was taken to hospital, where, sadly, her life could not be saved," the Stockholm Marathon said.

"Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones."

Alene reportedly died while training in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

The Stockholm Marathon, which Alene won in two hours, 30 minutes and 38 seconds (2:30:38), was the final race of her life.

According to Alene's World Athletics profile, the Ethiopian completed 26 marathons for 12 wins between 2012 and 2025.

Her marathon personal best was 2:27:26, set in 2023 at the Cape Town Marathon, which is in the running to join the Sydney Marathon as a world marathon major.
