'I'm very proud': Olympic star Matthew Denny shatters Australian record with 72-metre discus throw

Matthew Denny has etched his name deeper into the history books after landing a record-breaking throw at the Oklahoma Throw Series.

Denny, an Olympic bronze medallist, recorded a throw of 72.07m to become the first Australian in history to surpass the 70 metre mark in discus throwing.

The 28-year-old shattered his previous national record of 69.96m in eight degree weather on Sunday in what was the fifth longest-recorded throw in the sport's history.

Denny set the previous national record during the Diamond League final last year and managed to put all his throws around a similar distance.

Two of his six throws went over the 70m mark while the other four were just over 69m.

Denny dedicated his new personal best result to his late father, John, who died following the Olympic Games last year.

"This one is for Dad," Denny said after his throw.

"He was a country guy who just did it anyway and got the job done no matter what the circumstances were. It keeps me accountable to not complain and just get the job done.

"Looking at where I've come from and for a kid that just started with a circle in a country town, to then come to another country town across the other side of the world and go back to roots and break milestones.

"It shows that you don't need all the fancy stuff, you just need a bit of grit and a bit of determination.

"I'm very, very proud of myself and my team and what we've been able to achieve today," he continued.

"We're finally over the 70-metre mark and we did it in pretty solid fashion.

"We came here for one reason and that was for the world record. I think this was a great shakeout off the plane... I'm very proud to finally get over that mark."

Denny will return to competition in pursuit of the world record next week at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational.

The Australian star is set to face off against some of the worlds best throwers at the event including world recorder holder Mykloas Alekna.

Alekna set the world record at the invitational event last season where he recorded a distance of 74.35m.

The Lithuanian's throw at the event in 2024 was the first record to be set in the men's throwing event since Germany's Jurgen Schult in 1986.
