World Series of Poker: Amateur chip leader decimated in shot at $10 million

World Series of Poker fan favourite John Hesp has watched his chances of a $10 million payday be decimated after being crushed in a monster, game-changing hand at the final table of he Main Event in Las Vegas. 

The English amateur, who has won over many fans with his exciting play and theatrics, seemed to be cruising to a heads-up showdown after building the leading stack of over a 100 million chips. 

But the poker gods turned on the 64-year-old, who to this point has only ever won a $1000 in tournament play, when his Ace-10 hearts ran into second-stack, Scott Blumstein's pocket Aces. 

Blumstein raised pre-flop and was called by Hesp and the flop came Ace, seven, five rainbow board. 

Both players checked and the turn came 10 spades. And Hesp's fate was sealed. 

"I don't like the looks of this," commentator Norman Chad bemoaned. 

Blumstein bet 3 million in chips and Hesp, thinking he has the best hand with the two pair, re-raised the pot to 7 million. 

However, Blumstein, with the unbeatable triple Aces, goes in for the kill and three-betted to 17 million. 

After a moment away from the table, Hesp responded with the worst call of his tournament: an all-in ship. 

Blumstein, who doubled up to over 150 million chips, celebrated like he had won the tournament while Hesp, who was left with just 22 million in chips, could only wallow in one of this year's most brutal and sickening defeats. 

However, in a nice moment, Blumstein later threw his arm over the shoulder of a crestfallen Hesp in show of great sportsmanship. 

Still, Hesp will have a hard time forgetting about that hand!
