'Not the case': Bombers coach Brad Scott defiant as pressure builds

Brad Scott says he's not fazed by the growing noise around his future as coach of the Bombers, nor is he concerned by claims his senior players are confused about the club's rebuild.

It has been a rocky start to the season for Essendon, who sit at the bottom end of the ladder and are desperate to end a five-game losing streak. A depleted Richmond side is Essendon's target to break that streak this week, facing off in the annual 'Dreamtime at the G' match on Friday night.

Scott and the Bombers have struggled to escape the spotlight in the build-up to the game, as league greats and fans continue to pile on the heat due to poor performances.

Essendon have only managed one win this season. They also lost 17 games in a row across 2025 and 2026, equalling an unwanted club record.

And while that statistic continues to hang over Scott, he says he's not focusing on anything but his playing group.

"Quite frankly, (talk about my future) doesn't faze me. I don't live in that space," he said.

"I don't think about it. I've been in this game for over 30 years and I understand how things work and what people choose to talk about and what people are interested in.

"People can be interested in that; it just doesn't interest me."

Looming are matches against Richmond on Friday night and West Coast on August 2. Both the Tigers and Eagles are currently in the bottom four - as are Essendon and Carlton - so the Bombers will be under enormous pressure to beat those teams.

"We want to go out and win every single game we play," Scott said.

"That's the objective, and that's been a real challenge for us, clearly, for a whole host of reasons over the last 18 months. But we just spend so much time trying to get players in the frame of mind that they need to focus on the task at hand this week.

"We don't look any further ahead than that."

Scott turned his attention to "rampant speculation" that his senior players do not understand the timeline of the club's rebuild.

"Well, no. It's not the case," he said when asked if there is confusion about the timeline.

"But if you have to respond to what is rampant speculation then you'd just never stop talking.

"The reality is every club has a list management strategy and players are different. Players, as they should be, are worried with what's right in front of them.

"That's what we spend a lot of time as a coaching group getting players focused on, just their job right now.

"What their job right now is to go out and complete, try and win this week and then next week. That's what their focus is.

"We have a list at the moment where every player is capable of being part of the next successful era. I don't think we'll have a player on our list, at least voluntarily, retire in the next two, three, four years. Everyone is part of the plan.

"We've been very clear with those players: 'Look, this is where the club is at, this is the direction of the club'.

"Every player on our list is well and truly capable from an age perspective and a capability perspective of being part of our next successful era."
