GWS Giants captain Toby Greene was subject to an unfortunate blow on a cold night in Canberra, after dropping to the ground during the first quarter in a loss against Port Adelaide.

Port were originally inside 50 until the Giants cleared the ball with Greene attempting to take a mark in the centre square.

Power defender Aliir Aliir then came in behind and tried to spoil, but collected Greene in the hip with his knee.

Greene couldn't take a mark and dropped to his knees in agony, clutching at his hip.

"He goes down like he's been shot ... Toby's in real pain," caller Anthony Hudson said on Fox Footy.

Leigh Montagna added: "That's going to hurt, particularly on a cold night like tonight ... Keep it warm because once that cools down it'll get very, very sore."

The incident happened with 40 seconds left on the clock and Fox Footy's coverage detailed Greene was treated by physios for the majority of the break.

"He was in a lot of discomfort," Alastair Lynch said.

Greene returned for the second quarter but was eventually subbed out and replaced by Brent Daniels.

Post-match, Giants coach Adam Kingsley said he has "no idea" if Greene will be fine for next week.

Port Adelaide led by two points at the first break. It was the Giants leading by three points at half time.
