Hawthorn midfielder Finn Maginness is unlikely to return to the footy field this season after undergoing surgery for a lacerated kidney.

Maginness remains in hospital in Hobart after suffering the injury during the Hawks' 38-point win over the Power at UTAS Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It is not known exactly when and how the injury occurred.

The 24-year-old appeared fine during the post-match celebrations; however he later raised concerns that he was experiencing "mild abdominal discomfort".

Maginness is unlikely to return for the Hawks this season.

"This is a really concerning injury," Nine's chief AFL reporter Tom Morris told Footy Furnace.

"It would be a surprise to see him play again this year.

"These are the sort of injuries that you really are concerned about, so our best wishes to Finn Maginness."

Maginness was transported to hospital in Launceston before being flown to Hobart for further assessment.

He had surgery on Saturday evening and is expected to remain at Royal Hobart Hospital over the coming days, according to the Hawks' head doctor, Liam West.

"Finn's health is clearly our number one priority, and right now, the most important thing is that Finn is OK, is in the right place and he will recover fully," West said in a club statement on Sunday.

"We want to take this opportunity to thank the medical staff at LGH & the Royal Hobart for the fantastic care they have provided Finn."

Morris reported that Hawks footy boss Rob McCartney has flown to Hobart to provide ongoing support for Maginness.

The Hawks could not confirm if Maginness would return this season.

Morris noted Maginness' kidney injury is the same as the one that saw Richmond great Dustin Martin lose over 10 kilograms in 2021.

While the injury occurred late in the home-and-away season, Martin was unable to train for three months.
