'Really complex': AFLPA chief confirms chat with Freo's Alex Pearce, defends right to an opinion on political issues

AFL Players Association chief Paul Marsh has shared his thoughts on Fremantle captain Alex Pearce sharing a social media post in support of Palestine.

The key defender liked and shared a post from Irish band Kneecap on Instagram pertaining to the conflict in Gaza.

The staunch Irish republican band has been vocal in its support of Palestinians.

Fremantle, Pearce's management and the AFL have all declined to comment on the situation to date.

However, speaking exclusively to 9News Melbourne, Marsh said he supports players' right to an opinion.

"This is a really complex issue. I've personally spoken to people on all sides of this issue, and there are different views," Marsh said.

"We want players to be able to speak openly and share their voices, where leadership is required to show leadership.

"I think the discussion off the back of an issue like this is, is there a line? And, if so, where is the line?

"It's one that has caused a fair bit of debate and what we hope comes off that debate is that everyone learns a bit more about an issue that is really complex and these issues are happening in different parts of the world at the moment."

Marsh confirmed he has been in contact with Pearce regarding the post and the subsequent fallout.

"Yeah, absolutely (Pearce was receptive to the phone call)," he said.

"I've known Alex since the first day I started in this job. He's been a long term delegate of the AFLPA and a really intelligent person and someone I have deep respect for."

The 29-year-old Fremantle leader has played 131 games for the club, and all nine matches so far in 2025.

Marsh has resigned as AFLPA boss and has taken up the equivalent role with the Australian cricket union.
