Andrew Krakouer mourned by hundreds at funeral as friends and family pay tribute

Former Richmond Tigers and Collingwood Magpies star Andrew Krakouer has been remembered as a "special" human at a funeral in Perth on Tuesday.

Krakouer passed away in March from heart failure at the age of 42.

He retired from the AFL in 2013 after 137 games for the Tigers and Magpies.

"I just remember seeing him and thinking, man this brother's special," former teammate Héritier Lumumba said at his funeral.

Krakouer started his career in 2001 before his time at Richmond ended when he was delisted in 2007.

He returned to Western Australia but in 2008 was sentenced to jail after he was found guilty of assault. Krakouer was released in August 2009 and played for Swan Districts in 2010.

It was there he restarted his career and won the 2010 WAFL grand final, claiming the best on ground title.

"His grand final display ranks as probably the finest and most impactful individual games ever played in the WAFL," former Swan Districts coach Brian Dawson said.

Krakouer then joined Collingwood before finishing on 35 games with the club in 2013.

A career in the media followed, working on the Marngrook Footy Show and Yokayi Footy Show.

His co-host of the latter, Megan Waters, spoke glowingly of Krakouer.

"He didn't shy away from the hard stuff, he hit it head on with courage and so much heart," she said.

"... It's time to put your spirit to rest now, see you in the dreamtime brother."

Jeanice Krakouer remembered her relative as "a young man of incredible warmth, kindness and quiet strength".
