Lions coach in the dark as Joe Daniher retirement rumour refuses to go away

Brisbane premiership coach Chris Fagan decided not to address speculation around forward Joe Daniher's future before their triumphant 60-point grand final victory on Saturday.

There have been suggestions that Daniher would hang up the boots after their premiership victory, with Fagan choosing not to bring them up on the eve of the biggest match of their season.

And while we can never know if the coach's tactics to remain cool worked in their grand final victory, it may have played a big part in Daniher's output on field.

"I didn't address it. I heard the banter late Friday night. I was out having dinner with my wife and it came up ... media, stuff on her phone," Fagan said on Fox on Monday night.

"I said, 'that's the first I've heard of that'. I decided not to address it."

Daniher went on to contribute well in their victory, kicking two goals and collecting 16 disposals.

The second of those goals, in the final term, caused an emotional reaction from Lions teammates and Daniher's parents in the stands.

But, days on from that premiership, Daniher still has not addressed what his future may hold.

And Fagan, who is closest to him, also doesn't have a clear picture of what 2025 and beyond may look like.

"I'm hoping it's not true (retirement). But you never know. Joe is a different character. He thinks about life a little differently than a lot of AFL players," he said.

"He may well feel that he's done all that he wants to do. But we haven't really had a discussion about that.

"I had a chat to Joey. He didn't say anything to me. I'll just wait for things to unfold."

Daniher is contracted for one more season, with reports that his teammates are keen for him to see out his contract as they push for a second premiership next year.
