Potentially 'shocking blow' as injury-prone Hawks defender limps off field

Hawthorn has suffered a potentially "shocking blow" weeks out from the AFL season with an injury-prone defender going down during a match simulation.

Changkuoth Jiath, 24, limped off the field at Waverley Park on Thursday with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

9News reporter Joshua Dawe revealed Jiath was being taken for a scan on the injury.

"Shocking blow if so," Dawe said.

"After an impressive first half on the wing in Hawthorn's intraclub, Changkuoth Jiath has just walked off the field with physios and headed into the injury tent."

The carnage continued for the Hawks with James Blanck suffering a knee injury later in the practice game.

Jiath has endured a shocking run with injuries.

He played only eight AFL games last year as he battled calf and Achilles issues, and played just 14 games in 2022.

As a result the club opted to send him to Qatar last month to rehab at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Doha.

Hawks head physio Andrew Lambart travelled with Jiath in the hope the club could put an end to the backman's injury troubles.

Hawthorn begins its season proper against Essendon on March 16.
