AFL draft 2023 RECAP: Shocks and locks - who your team selected in the first round

Well, that was an eventful night for the 29 lucky new draftees!

Wowee! What a first round!

With 29 picks, the first round of the 2023 AFL Draft has provided some very special picks, with some very special players about to write their own chapters of history.

With pick 29, the final of the night, Carlton has selected Ashton Moir.

A forward who plays like Bayley Fritsch, he can kick on both feet and can sneak goals from all angles.

Carlton may find a spot for him across half back, where he can build confidence with the game in front of him.

With pick 28, St Kilda has selected Lance Collard.

A general forward, he has drawn confidence to sneak goals from all angles.

He finished with a strong draft combine, with a strong 2km time trial

He has some craft in front of goals, likened to Bobby Hill, who just won the 2023 Norm Smith Medal.

With pick 27, Adelaide has selected Oscar Ryan.

Another draft bolter from the Murray Bushrangers, he comes in as a rebound defender.

He provides a dash as a strong sized half back that can break the lines for the Crows.

"Didn't make Vic Country last year, so worked my ass off. It's finally worked out, so just so grateful," he said.

With pick 26, Adelaide has has their bid matched by Gold Coast, selecting Will Graham.

He comes from the Suns academy, rounding off a brilliant night for Damien Hardwick in his new role as coach.

Despite sustaining a knee injury and missing a large chunk of football, Graham was able to slot back into his draft class as an important piece.

The defender will become a stalwart down back, with the ability to rebound off half back and create scoring chances up the ground.

With pick 25, Collingwood has selected Harry DeMattia.

The midfielder will slot right into the reigning premiers' side.

He is a true leader, named the the Vic Country vice captain this season, with his skills meaning he is a player that his teammates will want to play for.

"So grateful for the opportunity to be joining such a prestigious club," he said.

"I'll hopefully be part of back-to-back (premierships)!"

With pick 24, Collingwood has had their bid matched by Sydney, who select Caiden Cleary.

A hard runner who sets the play up for his teammates, the super fit midfielder knows how to bring the heat.

He's a player that sets up off the contest to receive and can run hard to create goals.

He will fit straight into the Bloods culture.

With pick 23, North Melbourne select Riley Hardeman.

WA's captain, he has a fantastic football brain and leads from his marking ability.

A general defender, North Melbourne has got an absolute steal.

His value will help compliment the Roos' youth.

He's got the speed to play on smalls, but his marking ability makes him stand out from the rest.

Asked how he managed his nerves waiting for his name, he said he'd been for a haircut today!

"It's no good now because it's been ruffled," Hardeman joked.

With pick 22, North Melbourne has selected Will Dawson.

He can play as a ruck and forward, but can become a Harris Andrews-type

He stands over 200cm and prides himself on his field kick.

The Rood have addressed a need, grabbing a special defender and tall for their list.
