Greater Western Sydney has moved to fill the hole left by the departure of Jeremy Cameron two years ago, by drafting a similar player first in the AFL draft.

The Giants snapped up Aaron Cadman with pick one on Monday night.

Cadman has drawn strong comparisons to Cameron, who played for the Giants before shipping off to Geelong in 2020, and winning a premiership with the Cats this year.

The Sydney club is hoping Cadman can eventually play a similar role in the New South Wales capital.

"He ticks all the boxes you really want from a key forward, he does it all," AFL great Leigh Montagna told Fox Footy's draft coverage.

The athletic left-footer averaged six marks and 14 disposals in the national championships - on top of kicking 10 goals - on his way to All-Australian selection.

Cadman also won the Greater Western Victoria Rebels' best and fairest after kicking 34 goals. for the season.

"It's so special. Never in a million years would I have though I'd be in this position," the teenager said on stage after being called as No.1 pick.

"To share it with my family and friends, and all these people in the room, it's super special.

"We haven't spoken too much about the position I'll be playing, it's more where I'll be staying and who I'll be staying with (in Sydney).

"I can't wait to get into it and meet all the boys."

Cadman was presented with a Giants shirt by small forward Toby Greene.

Greene is a polarising figure in football, with a knack for getting under the skin of opponents and infuriating rival fans.

Cadman drew a laugh from the crowd when asked about meeting Greene on stage.

"I shook his hand before and had a good conversation with him, he's the best bloke I've ever met," he said.
