Exciting Melbourne youngster Clayton Oliver earned the first AFL Rising Star nomination of the new season for his eye-catching performance in the Demons' win over GWS.

Oliver, 18, gathered 22 possessions - 15 of them contested - in the thrilling two-point victory over the Giants at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

The fourth overall player selected at last year's draft, Oliver is a bullocking midfielder who is also a polished disposer of the ball by hand or foot.

He wasn't expected to be taken so high in the draft earlier in the year but shot into top-five calculations with a stunning season with the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup that earned him the Morrish Medal as the best and fairest player in the competition.
