'Not for $500,000': Kane Cornes reveals he turned down fight with Dane Swan

Not even $500,000 is enough to lure Kane Cornes back into the boxing ring, with the Port Adelaide great declaring he will be hanging up the gloves.

Cornes made his boxing debut on the 2024 Gather Round exhibition fight card, where he fell to the power of former Tigers and Bulldogs star Nathan Brown.

But the Port Adelaide great's appeal to the sport's promoters endures, with Cornes revealing he has been approached to lace up the gloves again.

"I get a text message the other day and I was offered another fight for January," Cornes said on SEN.

"I almost laughed when I got the text... It was to fight Dane Swan."

Swan, a Collingwood great, made an impressive debut in the ring in April, making light work of ex-teammate Dale Thomas.

Following the bout, Swan admitted he would be tempted to return to the ring on the condition he would be offered a significant amount of cash.

But the prospect of stepping into the ring with the 2011 Brownlow Medallist did not get Cornes excited.

"Honestly, I wouldn't do it for half a million dollars," he said.

"I wouldn't even do it. If someone said, 'Here is a cheque for $500,000' I promise you I wouldn't do it.

"Swan, he can seriously fight. What was overlooked was how dominant he was over Dale Thomas on that night. Dale Thomas lost but no one talks about that fight.

"I would not get anywhere near Dane Swan. He just knew what he was doing and you could see it."

Cornes said his preparation to fight Brown was one "of the worst thing's I've done" and the "most stressful" experience.

He also admitted that his talent in the ring is not on par with his proposed rival.

"Honestly, as if they would want me back as a punching bag in the ring," said Cornes.

"I worked really hard for eight weeks [in preparation for Brown], it was the fittest I've ever been. But eight weeks of boxing when you've never put boxing gloves on before is not going to cut it.

"(Swan) just knew what he was doing and you could see it.

"Boxers who actually have some training and have done it for a while, can get out of the way, defend, will be all over someone like me who had no idea what I was doing.

"I became a shocking person in the lead up to that, it was the most stressful thing. But look, I'm glad I did it."

Cornes suggested his former rival could be the best person to take on Swan in the ring.

"He should fight Nathan Brown that would be a better fight, surely," he said.

"We will have to wait and see if Swanny gets back in the ring."
