Brisbane Lions' dominant fourth quarter seals second AFLW premiership over North Melbourne

Brisbane Lions have won the AFLW grand final, beating the Kangaroos 7.2 (44) - 4.3 (27) in a nail-biting encounter.

The Lions stormed home in the final quarter to claim their second premiership in the competition following a victory in 2021.

Ellie Hampson and Dakota Davidson were strong for the Lions, kicking two goals each but it was captain Breanna Koenen who finished with the best on ground award.

"Pretty surreal feeling ... I just want to thank you (my teammates), this is a reflection of my crew over there," she said upon accepting the honour.

North Melbourne's fans were left in agony with the side blowing a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Kangaroos haven't won a premiership in the AFL or AFLW since 1999.

North were out of the blocks early, as Jasmine Garner kicked the only goal of the first quarter.

The Lions started to mount their case in the second quarter but the Kangaroos held strong to lead 2.2 (14) - 2.1 (13).

North looked as if they had one hand on the trophy though when they produced a quality third quarter performance to lead by seven points.

However, the Lions scored four unanswered goals through Koenen, Hampson and Davidson to clinch the trophy.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Lions coach Craig Starcevich was in awe of his players.

"These people over here are absolutely unbelievable, we've had an interesting year with a few challenges along the way which makes today all the more sweeter. We're just completely in awe," he said.

"Our coaching staff have done a magnificent job and our medical staff have done a great job preparing you, but you guys blow us away every time."

Brisbane's win came after the Lions men's team lost the AFL grand final to Collingwood.
