'He's an agent provocateur': Eddie McGuire backs Daniel Gorringe podcast amid Sam Docherty fallout

Eddie McGuire has applauded Daniel Gorringe for playing the role of "agent provocateur" on his Dan Does Footy podcast, and Sam Docherty for having the guts to "say what everyone is thinking".

As the fallout from the former Blues skipper's comments about his old club continues, McGuire applauded Gorringe for "getting the good mail", and called for players and pundits to speak their mind more.

But he also backed Carlton's decision to rescind an invitation to a club function.

"Let's get to the point we're actually telling the truth. It does my head in," McGuire said on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy podcast.

"Just say it how it is, OK? I go to games every week and there's 80,000 people who are all watching the same thing happen in front of them. They know what's going on. Pretending it's not happening doesn't mean it's not happening.

"What he said, Docherty, was exactly what everyone saw and was thinking.

"At the same time, inside a club under siege, I like what Carlton's done. You've got to sometimes say – I don't care if it's a favourite son or not – 'Hey, we looked after you. We stood by you. We carried you through.'

Docherty was forced to apologise after Gorringe played an expletive-laden rant on his podcast without his permission.

In the voice message, he lashed the club following its 63-point loss to Sydney in the season-opening game last Thursday.

Docherty apologised for the sweary nature of the rant, but stood by the comments.

Several heavyweights have criticised multiple aspects of the saga. Matthew Lloyd was less than impressed Gorringe had played the comments in the first place, while Rory Sloane said Docherty should be trying to help the Blues rather than add to the pile-on.

McGuire's co-host Jimmy Bartel said much of the brouhaha was down to legacy media being unhappy with how "new" medias, including podcasts, operate.

McGuire said Gorringe's podcast is akin to "throwing a big brick into the water".

"He's doing really well, he's doing fantastic. He is playing his role beautifully," he said.

"He is no different to what Kane Cornes is on Seven and SEN - he's an agent provocateur.

"He has to come out with an opinion. He has to do something different every week otherwise he's not around. It's no different to Kyle and Jackie O – their job is to outrage.

"As I always say, don't put the saucer of milk in front of the cat and then kick the cat if it licks the milk.

"He got the good mail, and it was too good to not run it."
