The suitcase that made travelling a million times easier

I’ve never invested in a decent suitcase. Whenever I would travel, I’d just shove all my stuff in one from my parents’ attic and hope for the best.

I managed to sustain such low-maintenance travel until a trip to New York last year, where, in a rush to grab my bag from arrivals and make my connecting flight, the zipper ripped and all my underwear scattered across the airport floor. Perfect when you’re in a rush!

I recently had the pleasure of taking a Samsonite Paralux suitcase on a recent trip to Japan. I wouldn’t say I’m one to get very excited about a suitcase, but this Samsonite Paralux was a game-changer.

I'll tell you why.

Samsonite Paralux Suitcase (75cm) Samsonite

Features:

Dual-access design: You can open the suitcase from the centre split or via the front door, giving you access to the entire interior. I found this feature SO handy; it was ideal when space was tight (I was staying in hostels), when I couldn’t be bothered to labour over opening the whole thing up and when time was short (panicking as we tried to navigate some of Japan’s enormous train stations).

Removable packing cubes: The suitcase comes with three removable packing cubes for a more customised packing experience – all kept safe with TSA-approved locks.

Easy to move: When I say this moved like butter, I mean it. It features double suspension wheels, top and side carry handles, and right-height adjustable handles to ensure security and ease. It tackled cobbled stones, busy pavements and escalators with immense ease, and without giving me chronic arm ache.

Expandable: I was panicking a little after doing some serious shopping damage in Tokyo. I was worried I wouldn’t have any space in my suitcase. Fortunately, this case has a one-inch expansion zipper, so I was able to squeeze my thrifted jackets, ramen bowls and posters in it. I did have to pay extra because it was overweight, oops.

I loved the lid feature, it made packing and unpacking mid-trip so much easier. Siena Hocking

Bluetooth tracker holder: A nifty little feature to slot your AirTag of choice in. I popped in my Tile by Life360 Mate for peace of mind.

Sustainable additions: The exterior shells are made with at least 50 per cent post-consumer recycled polypropylene, trolley tubes with 100 per cent recycled aluminium, and all fabrics, zipper tape, and linings across the collection feature 100 per cent recycled PET by weight.

My only qualm would be the colour. Lighter shades of anything – luggage, clothing, whatever – always make me nervous. On arriving back in Sydney, the case had become a bit grubby from its journey on the luggage belts. No major issue, though, just cosmetic! And there’s the option of navy, too.

So, would I recommend this suitcase? Yes, absolutely! Though quite pricey, it’s certainly an investment piece that will make any trip that little bit smoother.
