What is the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2?
The Galaxy SmartTag2 is a tracking device released by Samsung in October 2023. It is designed to be attached to your personal belongings as a security measure in case they are lost or misplaced.
Each SmartTag2 pairs with a Galaxy smartphone or Android tablet and must be registered to the SmartThings app. This app can be paired with up to 200 SmartTags and connects your smart home appliances to your device for easier control and smart home integration.
The tag connects to your device via Bluetooth and no subscription to a tracking system or network is needed.
The SmartTag2 is small and compact, weighing 13.75g and measuring just 28.8mm x 52.44mm x 8mm. You can attach them to bags, keyrings, and pet collars with their metal loop and ring-shaped design. Cases can also be purchased for added protection.
Available in black or white, each has up to 500 days of battery life, or up to 700 days in Power Saving Mode – a 50 per cent increase from previous models. They also have an IP67 dust and water resistance rating, withstanding submersion into water to a depth of one metre for up to 30 minutes.
If switching Galaxy smartphones to a new one, your SmartThings information can be synced, so there is no need to re-pair the SmartTag2 with your new device.
How does the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 find my lost things?
When you first lose an item, you can set your SmartTag2 to Search Nearby Mode. This will help you retrace your steps and find your item if located within a 120m range of your connected device.
When in this mode, your device will activate Compass View and give directions to your belongings. You can also use your phone's camera so when your item is close and your camera is pointing in its direction, the general location will be surrounded by green sparkles helping you pinpoint exactly where it is.

Still can't find your item? The SmartTag2 can make a buzzing sound for easier detection. The Search Nearby Mode can also connect with Google Maps when the tag is within 120m but not in your immediate location.
If you've misplaced your belongings outside of the 120m range, you can set your SmartTag2 to Lost Mode. This will turn on the tag's NFC (Near Field Communication).
If someone finds your items, they can scan your tag and see your contact information including your mobile number and email address. You can also add a personalised message to alert the finder and help get it back to you.
Lost Mode is compatible with any mobile device with a web browser and an NFC reader, not just Samsung or Android devices.
What else can the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 track?
The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 is extremely intuitive, tracking your item even before you've lost it. If you've left your item somewhere and moved out of the 120m range, you can receive a smartphone alert once the item is out of range.
It's also a great option for pet owners with Pet Walking Mode. When the tag is clipped onto their collar, you can track your pet's walks, including distance travelled and route taken.
On the SmartTag2 is a Smart Button. This pairs with smart home products linked with the SmartThings app to control and use.
Will my data and personal information be safe?
The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 has been programmed with data safety in mind. When setting up your tag, your location information will only be shared with your permission. Users can also disable Lost Mode to hide their contact information.
The SmartThings app encrypts data through the Samsung Knox system. This is the brand's mobile security system with multilayer technology to prevent hacking and virus infiltration and protect your data.
The app also has the unknown tag alerts feature. This is designed to prevent location tracking by alerting users if there's unauthorised tracking of their tag or an unrecognised SmartTag is following them.
