What is the Nintendo Switch?

The Nintendo Switch is a handheld gaming console from Japanese gaming company Nintendo. Originally released in March 2017, it has since become the company's best-selling home console and is recognised as the third best-selling gaming console ever behind the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo DS.

Released in 2017, this is the first of the Nintendo Switch consoles, with a 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen and 32GB of storage. Weighing 400g, it has up to nine hours of battery life and takes approximately three hours to charge.

The Nintendo Switch Lite is the smaller version with a 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen and weighing just 275g. Released in 2019, it has 32GB of internal storage and up to seven hours of battery life per charge.

With a 7-inch LCD touchscreen and 64GB of storage, the Nintendo Switch OLED model was released in 2021 and is the largest Switch console available. It has an adjustable stand to set the most comfortable viewing angle when playing in Tabletop mode, up to nine hours of power and it takes three hours to fully charge.

How do you play the Nintendo Switch?

There are three ways to play with your Nintendo Switch. 

In Handheld mode, gamers use the controllers and play directly on the screen. You can also play in Tabletop mode using the flip stand to share the screen with others and play in multiplayer (this will require additional controllers for this mode to work). For improved multiplayer gaming, TV mode lets you dock the console and play your Switch games directly on your TV.

Each Nintendo Switch comes with a pair of JoyCon controllers. These can be used with one in each hand both vertically or horizontally or paired together replicating a traditional gaming controller – it all depends on the game you're playing.

These controllers can be set to HD Rumble. This has the same effect as haptic feedback for gamers to feel the sensations their character would feel in-game.

The multiplayer function acts in three ways. Gamers can play with Local co-op by playing in TV mode from one Nintendo Switch console and in Local wireless by pairing eight Nintendo Switch consoles together to play the same game on each device. They can also play online with compatible games using a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

While in-game, players can take screenshots from their games using the Capture Button that will be saved to an album on the console. When looking at their album, they can add text to these images and share them on social media.

On top of playing, gamers can also access the Nintendo eShop to buy digital versions of games as well as DCL (downloadable content) and Nintendo newsfeed to learn the latest on upcoming games, gaming updates and announcements.

Who is the Nintendo Switch made for?

The Nintendo Switch is recognised as a family-friendly device and a great gaming option for kids with multiple G and PG games – in particular, those related to the Super Mario franchise.
