To mark the occasion, we’ve been eyeing off some stylish new work bags to make carrying all the essentials a little easier (and let’s face it, easier on the eyes, too).

But before you buy, if you’ve found yourself in the same position but don’t know where to begin navigating the relevant work bag deduction rules, then you’re in luck because we spoke with H&R Block’s Director of Tax Communications, Mark Chapman, about all things work-related deductions. 

Here’s everything you need to know.

What are the rules taxpayers should know when claiming work bag deductions?

In short, a laptop bag, briefcase, or similar carry bag used to transport work equipment, documents, or a laptop between home and work can generally be deductible at tax time. However, the key here is ensuring that the bag is used for work-related purposes, Chapman adds. 

According to Chapman, if your new bag costs $300 or less, you can typically claim an immediate, full deduction. However, if you’re hoping to purchase a workbag that exceeds this amount, then you may need to claim a deduction over several years, as opposed to all at once. 

The biggest mistake taxpayers make is assuming that an expense becomes deductible simply because it relates in some way to work. Chapman warns that if you ever find yourself unsure of what you can/can’t claim, ask yourself these three questions: 

• Did I spend the money myself?
• Was the expense directly related to earning my income?
• Do I have records to prove it?

If you find yourself answering no to any of these questions, then a deduction might not be available, so when in doubt, be sure to seek advice from a professional before lodging the return.

Can you claim dry-cleaning as a tax deduction? 

According to H&R Block’s Director of Tax Communications, Mark Chapman, laundry and dry-cleaning expenses are only deductible where they relate to eligible work clothing such as compulsory uniforms, occupation-specific clothing or protective clothing. 

Where laundry expenses are claimed, taxpayers should use a reasonable basis for calculating the amount and be able to explain how the figure was determined if questioned.

Can I claim clothes I wear to work on tax?

According to Chapman, tax rules draw a clear distinction between conventional clothing and deductible work uniforms. A standard blazer, suit, trousers, skirt or business shirt would ordinarily be regarded as conventional clothing, even if an employer requires employees to wear it.

A deduction may be available where the blazer forms part of a compulsory, employer-specific uniform that is distinctive and identifies the organisation, particularly where the uniform is registered or clearly branded. 

Are there any commonly overlooked deductions Australians may not realise they can claim?

Chapman notes that some of the most commonly overlooked deductions include:

• Union and professional association fees
• Professional subscriptions and registrations
• Income protection insurance premiums (when held outside superannuation)
• Work-related training and professional development
• Tax agent fees from the previous year's return
• Home office running expenses where employees genuinely work from home
• Work-related use of mobile phones and internet services
