The cooling blanket that radically changed my sleep

As someone who runs really hot when sleeping, I've always been fascinated by the idea of a 'cooling blanket'. While silk sheets would be lovely, they're not in my price range, and washing them without destroying them feels like a task I'm not up for.

However, The Oodie Cooling Blanket was released at the end of last year. I trialled it over the summer, and these are my honest thoughts.

I'm a notoriously hot sleeper, I struggle to regulate my temperature overnight. This extends as long as the hot weather does, which is quite a few months in Sydney. I was experiencing restless nights when I first got the Cooling Blanket, and I was able to test it immediately.

First of all, I loved the feel of this blanket. It's made of 90 per cent nylon and 10 per cent elastane, crafted into a soft, silky fabric that somehow contours to your body. It's so lightweight that you never feel like you're battling to get comfortable underneath it. The elastane also has a cool-touch sensation that feels immediately soothing.

How does it work?

Created from breathable fibres, the Cooling Blanket trap heat, allowing it to disperse. It's also moisture-wicking, which helps you stay cool.

It also has a Qmax score, which measures how cool and refreshing a fabric feels against the skin. The higher the score, the cooler it is, and the Cooling Blanket has a score of 0.32. For reference, cotton has a score of 0.11, bamboo has a score of 0.15, silk has a score of 0.19, and lyocell has a score of 0.21. The Cooling Blanket is miles ahead of these fabrics in how much cooler it makes you feel.

What was it like to use?

I used this blanket every night for weeks, except for those few nights that hit close to 30 degrees. On those nights, there was nothing that could give me relief.

I felt it really did keep me cool overnight in a way I'd never experienced. Sure, I have a pedestal fan, but having cold air blowing on you can become irritating (and even too cold) in the wrong set of circumstances. I found I'd look forward to climbing under the cooling blanket and reading in bed before heading to sleep, feeling like my temperature was 'just right'.

I find I'm reaching for the blanket most nights again. And given Sydney weather is so unpredictable, I feel like I'll be sleeping under it until June at least.
