The right shoe for your workout is important, as some footwear is designed to perform better for different training styles. If your style of choice is strength, CrossFit, or more general cross-training, you'll need something stable and grippy, with a stable base, foot balance, and a good toe box.

Why do I need a strength-specific sneaker?

According to Dr Abdel Kak, Specialist Podiatric Surgeon at the Sydney Foot Clinic, “The right shoe will help with the foundation of the technique and provide a stable base for the lifter to help with performance and avoid injury.”

How can I tell if a sneaker is stable enough for strength training?

Dr Kak has a quick 30-second ‘stress test’ to ensure a shoe is stable enough for the weight room. Firstly, you shouldn’t be able to twist the shoe from side to side, as it indicates weakness. The shoe should bend only at the forefoot (where your toes are/bend), and the rest of the shoe, from the midsole to the back, should be firm. Then, push your thumb down on the heel counter of the shoe; you shouldn’t be able to collapse the heel, but rather the heel should be strong.

What shoes are best for strength training?

“Just remember, flat, firm, and hard to twist means it is safe for the weight room,” Dr Kak reiterates. He says that the Nike Metcon has been a staple in the lifting world, but any of the above will level up your weights session.
