9PR: Curly hair products

9Product Reviews

As a curly girl who grew up in the 2000s, I never felt like there were many options for embracing my curls.

After spending my teenage years frying my hair into submission with straighteners, curly hair has finally broken into the cultural zeitgeist, thanks to TikTok. However, you can always have too much of a good thing, and recently, I've found the endless videos that spruik different routines and products can be overwhelming.

At some point, I just had to put the phone down and see what worked. I've spent a lot of money on hair products, so you can trust these recommendations have my total backing. As someone who has thrown in the towel (an expensive microfibre one at that) with curly hair routines, I'm here to tell you all about the products that work for me.

My non-negotiable spendy curly hair product

Bread Beauty Supply Foam Curl Defining Mousse

9PR: Bread Beauty Supply Hair - Foam Curl Defining Mousse

9Product Reviews

If you have curly hair, you'll know that mousse can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Some mousses have dried out my hair while providing way too much volume, leaving me looking like the frontman of an '80s pop band. I've found that if you spend a bit more money on mousse, though, it can actually be fantastic.

Enter: Bread Beauty Supply Foam Curl Defining Mousse.

This product helped me cull about four others from my laborious curly hair routine. Now, I use a curl cream (which you can find here) and this mousse. I apply it pretty liberally to the bottom three-quarters of my hair, usually something like five pumps to each side. It's lightweight and goes on easily, but it doesn't leave you with that insanely crunchy look that mousse and gel are famous for.

If I sleep with a satin bonnet on, I can get away with putting a bit of oil in my strands of a morning and walking out the door. Most curly girls will know the pain of resetting their hair with water every day, so this product has also saved me precious time in the mornings.

At $50, this isn't the most expensive hair product I've bought, but it still felt like a lot of money as I tapped my card. However, it's changed the way I manage my hair, so I think it's worth it. I'll definitely be re-buying this one.

The spendy curly hair products that are nice to have

Christophe Robin Luscious Curl Conditioning Cleanser

9PR: Luscious Curl Conditioning Cleanser

9Product Reviews

Leaving curly hair soft to the touch, this is a lovely product when it comes to washing your hair.

Virtue Labs Anti-Frizz Cream

An absolute favourite of mine, this product from Virtue Labs uses a keratin protein to smooth out your hair and make it curly/wavy rather than frizzy. I find it runs out very quickly, so I only buy it sporadically.

Virtue Labs Curl Leave-In Butter

9PR: Virtue Curl Leave-In Butter

9Product Reviews

Another fantastic offering from Virture Labs, the Curl Leave-In Butter leaves no trace other than soft, pliable curls.

Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray For Curly Hair

This super-hydrating spray is also perfect for getting rid of the hard cast you get on curly hair if you use a gel for hold.

The affordable curly hair products that I have on high-rotation

John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Finishing Crème

9PR: Frizz-Ease Style Creme Size

9Product Reviews

A panicked chemist purchase made on holiday (where I'd forgotten a bunch of products) has become a go-to. I keep the John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Finishing Crème on my work desk for when my hair is frizzing out of control.

Clever Curl Cream

9PR: Clever Curl Cream 130ml

9Product Reviews

This is the beloved curl cream I put on before the Bread Beauty Supply Foam. I find it softens my curls and helps them form after the shower.

Marc Daniels Treatment Go Curly

9PR: Marc Daniels Treatment Go Curly

9Product Reviews

The gel that saved my frizzy Hagrid hair in Bali, the Marc Daniels Treatment Go Curly has a magnificent hold. And at just $8, it'll always be high on my recommendation list.

Eco Style Gel

9PR: Eco Style Gel

9Product Reviews

I saw this gel being touted by many curly girls on TikTok and bought myself a tub on Amazon. While it is $30, even liberal application doesn't seem to deplete the giant 950mL container, which has lasted me about four months so far.

Clever Curl Humid Weather Gel

9PR: Clever Curl Humid Weather Gel

9Product Reviews

A summer saviour, make sure you keep this one handy in the humid weather, or if you're spending time by the beach.
