Trent Kniese is a Sports Reporter at 9News Melbourne.
Born and raised in Frankston South, Trent embarked on his academic journey at Swinburne University of Technology in 2020, pursuing a Bachelor of Media and Communications with a major in Journalism. Just days after graduating in 2023, he dove straight into the world of professional journalism as a Sports Reporter for 7 News Wide Bay (Hervey Bay). This initial role provided him with invaluable experience covering local sports and honing his reporting skills.
After a year of impactful reporting in regional Queensland, Trent joined the sports team at Nine News Melbourne in January 2024. He was quickly entrusted with covering some of the biggest sporting spectacles, including the highly anticipated AFL, NRL, and NBL Grand Finals. These assignments allowed Trent to showcase his ability to deliver compelling sports narratives to a broad audience.
Among the many stories Trent has covered, one particularly resonated with him: the experience of Blake Robinson in May 2024. Blake, a local footballer, faced the distressing reality of online bullying due to a spinal condition. Trent’s sensitive and comprehensive reporting on Blake’s story not only brought awareness to the issue but also highlighted the immense support the young athlete received from the community. "Whilst Blake’s story was initially confronting to tell, given the pain he had been through, the outpouring of support he received following the piece was a great reminder of the good in the world and as a journalist, it’s always rewarding to share those moments," Trent reflects.
Outside of his professional life, Trent remains a passionate sports enthusiast. He is a dedicated follower of Collingwood (AFL), the Melbourne Storm (NRL), Chelsea (EPL), and the San Antonio Spurs (NBA), demonstrating a wide appreciation for various codes. To maintain his fitness, he actively participates in basketball, tennis, and soccer.
