Women have shared the most painful, scary and upsetting experiences they face daily that they feel have been totally "normalised" by society.

Venting their frustrations in a lengthy Reddit thread, women from around the world opened up about the things they deal with every day that shouldn't be acceptable.

From men speaking over women in the workplace, to pushing unrealistic beauty standards, and a culture of rampant sexual harassment, women revealed the worst of what they experience every day.

"Downplaying how horrible periods can be. I've seen so many men act like women are being babies on their period and it's just enraging," one woman wrote.

Others agreed, one chiming in: "To couple with this: downplaying our emotions because of periods."

Not only does downplaying the effects of periods leave women frustrated, it can also mean serious medical conditions go undiagnosed.

Many women with endometriosis – which can cause intense pelvic pain and cramps – say that they thought their pain was "normal" because painful periods are so downplayed in society.

Sexual abuse and harassment are also downplayed, said women in the thread, who were frustrated by how "normalised" it has become.

"The amount of sexual abuse and harassment that is rampant in our society. Most women I know started being harassed by men when they were elementary school students, and that is seen as normal," one said.

Another added: "I've never worked a job where I wasn't sexually harassed or touched inappropriately."

Others pointed out that inappropriate behaviour from men is often normalised from a young age with comments like "boys will be boys", and telling girls that when boys are mean or inappropriate with them, it means they like them.

It doesn't help that women are often expected to defer to men, in society and in relationships.

One wrote: "I know way too many women who think it's normal to have to do most of the housework and childcare, plus the mental and emotional load of household management, even if they also have an outside job.

"Also to manage their husbands as if they are children who can't be expected to remember to make appointments or buy their own clothes or things for the children or holidays or take care of menial tasks without reminders and help."

Women in the thread said it was sad how "normalised" it is for women to give up their friends, careers, hobbies, etc. for their male partners.

One said that it also extends to the bedroom, where many women feel that certain things are expected of them.

"Feeling 'expected' to have sex and having their pleasure being secondary [is normalised]," one wrote.

"It wasn't until I was older that I realised how flawed it was for me to think that way and for men to have reinforced that thinking via their actions."

Other upsetting things that have been "normalised", according to the thread, included everything from catcalling, to body-shaming, mum-shaming and slut-shaming, to the painful effects of diet culture.

Sadly, there's no quick fix for these behaviours and attitudes that leave so many women frustrated, hurt and scared in their daily lives.

However, many people in the thread said they were glad the conversation about many of these issues was finally being brought into the mainstream.
