A sports reporter has revealed the bizarre way she discovered her boyfriend was cheating on her in a series of tweets that has left the internet in stitches.

Jane Slater, a correspondent with the NFL, took to social media to share the story of how she used her Fitbit to catch her man getting something extra on the side.

"An ex-boyfriend once got me a Fitbit for Christmas. I loved it," she tweeted.

"We synched up, motivated each other... didn't hate it until he was unaccounted for at 4am and his physical activity levels were spiking on the app."

You read that right – Slater's boyfriend's heart rate was suddenly spiking and his physical activity was through the roof when, for all she knew, he should have been asleep.

"Spoiler alert: he was not enrolled in an OrangeTheory [workout] class at 4am," Slater added.

What's worse is that she only caught his odd activity because she was waiting at his house with balloons for his birthday and had grown concerned when he didn't come home.

Though Slater laughs about it these days, she admitted that she often wishes the story wasn't real.

Other Twitter users could hardly believe that it was real, many wondering how Slater's ex could be so stupid.

"The real question is why he's having sex with a Fitbit on," one wrote.

Some women even shared their own stories of discovering cheating via technology

"My ex-husband got caught in an affair because he was wearing the training watch and heartbeat monitor my mum bought him for Christmas while 'running'," one woman said.

"It was the under-one-minute heart rate spike that confirmed things for me! #prematuresayswhat."

Another joked: "My ex's physical activity would have only spiked for like 90 seconds so it would have been practically unnoticeable anyway."

Slater revealed in a follow up tweet that this wasn't her only bad breakup, sharing another dating horror story

"I also had a guy get drunk and bring another girl home forgetting I was spending the night there," she wrote.

"We were set to go to church the next morning and I stayed in to get sleep. I could write a book."
