Real-life couple bringing '80s musical to life

If you head along to new musical The Wedding Singer, based on the Adam Sandler movie you'd be forgiven for thinking some of the more romantic scenes seem rather realistic.

And you'd be right — because actors Nadia Komazec and Haydan Hawkins, who play on-off-couple Holly and Sammy met while rehearsing for the show — and are now engaged.

The pair, who knew of each other through the theatre world but had never crossed paths, say the attraction hit them both from the moment they first met.

Nadia confessed she'd asked the director if her co-star was "hot", and then looked him up.

"We started rehearsals, we were very professional and just mates," she said.

"We just got on really well and struck up a very fast friendship, and then all of a sudden it was like, 'Oh, my God', I'm 32 years, you're 33, you're saying all the right things, wanting all the same things..."

"There was chemistry, that's for sure," Haydan added.

"I thought 'this is easy, I can fall in love with this chick every night."

The director also noticed they were getting along rather well.

"He was saying 'oh, there's no chemistry here," Nadia joked.

The pair kept their growing closeness a secret at first, before the relationship became clear.

And they said it only helps their acting.

"We can just kind of dig down into our characters a little more," Haydan said.

Haydan popped the question after just three months, on a romantic horse riding trek in Adelaide.

"I organised a private trail ride, I had the ring in my pocket," he said.

"We went down to the beach, we got off the horse, she still didn't know what was happening, and then there was a picnic blanket, a couple of melted chocolates, Champagne, and I got down on one knee."

Nadia had "no idea" but said it was a romantic moment.

"I couldn't have asked for a more amazing proposal," she said.

"Being in a show, there's so many people [who] love to get engaged on a stage.

"I'm the opposite because I do that for a living — we're both such, over-the-top show people in moments like that. I think it's nice for it to be intimate."

A passing stranger even took photos for them.

The couple, who live in Melbourne, will get married at an old church in Adelaide this year — but said none of them will be playing the 'wedding singer."

"Neither of us are singing," Hayden joked, adding they will have plenty of music.

But before that, they've got a tour of the '80s musical to concentrate on.

And they said it's the perfect show to see, to forget about the world.

"It's feel-good, it's fun, it's high-energy," Nadia said.

"People are just going to have a couple of drinks and lose their mind," Haydan said.

The Wedding Singer Musical launches on January 5 in Sydney, with shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
