Why this dad has been wearing the same polo T-shirt for 20 years

She was always miffed about why her father wore the same polo T-shirt for 20 years.

Even when the top ripped, her father mended it and he always kept it in pristine condition.

But then the woman, known on Twitter as @922_riaru, discovered why, it left her and the internet in tears.

As she was clearing things out from her grandfather’s place after his recent passing, she discovered photos of her father and mother on their honeymoon, wearing matching polo tops.

Suddenly, @922_riaru realised why the piece of clothing was special to him, with her mother dying of cancer 18 years ago, when she was six and her younger brother was four.

Posting images of her father both then and now, the woman shared the heart-breaking story on social media.

The tweet, first posted in August, has since gone viral - with more than 307,000 likes and over 82,000 retweets.

Speaking to BuzzFeed News about the find, she said: "I wondered why he kept on wearing that old polo shirt.

“Why didn't he just buy a new one? I never imagined that the polo shirt would contain such a special memory for him."

"He wears it for any special occasion, be it a work study event or a trip out with the family," she added.

People have reacted in a number of ways, with some confessing to shedding tears over the story, while others have congratulated the father on being a “good dad and husband”.
