Uber driver helps deliver baby after passenger goes into labour

An Uber driver has helped deliver a baby after his pregnant passenger’s water broke in the back seat on the way to the hospital.

Erica and Niv Davidovich, from Los Angeles, ordered an Uber on Friday night to take them to the hospital, because they did not want to drive on the Jewish Sabbath, PEOPLE reports.

But Lexus had been on the road only minutes, before Erica realised the baby wasn’t waiting to get to the hospital, telling the driver and her husband "my water broke".

"We got a minute out onto the road and by that point, she said, 'Call 911. I think the baby is coming right now,'" Niv recalled.

"The driver was doing everything he could. He was running red lights, basically trying to get there as quick as possible," he added.

Niv said he thought at first his wife was “just having really bad contractions” but realised, she was actually having the baby: “... she said she thinks the head’s coming out, I said, eh. Then I looked down and she was right—the baby’s head was coming out.”

Uber driver Raymond Telles pulled over in front of a grocery store, staying on the phone to 911 while Erica gave birth in his backseat.

Erica delivered a healthy baby weighing six pounds and 12.5 ounces, with paramedics arriving shortly after to take Erica and her newborn to the hospital.

The couple already have three other children, Chana, 5, Rivka, 3 and Elisheva, 1.

Niv, who revealed the Uber driver’s backseat had been “wrecked by the ordeal”, credited Telles for making the nerve-racking experience easier.

“I think he was all part of the miraculous evening,” Nic says, “because I can certainly imagine that if I showed up in a car and two-and-a half-minutes later we’re in the middle of this maelstrom, there are certainly a lot of people who would be less calm and less accommodating. He was super chill, and I was very appreciative.”

The couple have chosen not to reveal the baby’s name for religious reasons. However, after his unique entry into the world people have come up with some pretty creative suggestions, including “Lexus” and “Uber”.
