His grieving family has now spoken out, claiming there were no childproof locks on the hotel door despite it being nine stories high.

"You would never think that a fun family vacation would be cut so short due to something so devastating and heart-wrenching," they write on a crowdfunding page.

"Our family will forever be changed and a piece of our heart died with our lil Spiderman."

The family describes Hunter as a "loving, kind, helpful, playful, joyful little boy".

"His smile lit up rooms when he entered," their message continues.

The family has an older child, Wyatt, aged six, whom they say can't understand "that his baby brother is forever gone".

They have pledged to fight to have childproof locks installed in high rise buildings.

"It is our mission to make sure that they put locks on these doors so another family never has to feel what we are going through," the message reads. "Even if we have to buy them ourselves."

Hunter's loved ones end their statement by saying he will not die in vain.
