Toddler almost chokes to death on sausage roll

A mother has issued a warning to parents after her toddler son almost choked to death on a sausage roll.

Henry Peddar, two, was rushed to hopsital and placed in intensive care after he started choking on the food and turning blue.

Mother Lucy Pedder, 28, from Surrey in the UK, told Net Mums she'd given her son the sausage roll to eat inside the house while she sat outisde in the garden with his younger sister.

She then saw Henry stumbling into the garden.

"If he hadn't have stumbled out to the back garden I may never have known he was choking," she said. "He's a fast eater so he must have shoved lots in at once and the pastry must've coated his throat and agitated him."

The mother-of-two said there were other people at her home a the time and they tried to pat him on the back, rub his chest and try and force their fingers down his throat to make him sick, but nothing worked.

"You don't think about how tiny they are or about breaking ribs, you just do everything you can," she said. "But I just felt helpless."

An ambulance arrived five minutes later and paramedics tried to unblock the toddler's windpipe, to no avail, so he was rushed to hospital.

Thankfully, Henry has made a full recovery.

"The sausage roll became lodged deep down in his windpipe and he aspirated [breathed in] some of the pastry into his right lung," Lucy explained.
