Tiffany Trump branded 'tone deaf' as she wishes brother happy birthday amid US riots

Donald Trump's daughter Tiffany has been labelled 'tone deaf' after sharing a birthday tribute to her brother Eric as violent riots unfolded in Washington DC.

On Tuesday, a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building in the nation's capital city while Congress was certifying incoming president Joe Biden's election win.

As the turmoil, including the resulting death of a woman shot at the scene, dominated headlines, Tiffany Trump decided to wish her brother a happy birthday.

"Happy Birthday @erictrump I love you and I'm so grateful to always have you by my side!" she wrote on Instagram and Twitter, posting photos of the pair.

Commenters were gobsmacked at her choice of timing.

Numerous commenters urged her to "read the room", while others branded the president's youngest daughter's post "tone deaf".

"Money can't buy you self awareness," one wrote.

"This seems appropriate right now as your dad's supporters are destroying democracy," another added.

"Are you aware your father has invoked and fueled an attack on our capital and to the peaceful transfer of power?" another asked.

Twitter user Sharon O'Dea suggested perhaps a private message would have been the way to go given the circumstances.

"Hi Tiffany. Not sure if you know but you can send birthday greetings privately by email or SMS rather than insensitively centring your own family over, for example, someone dying at the hands of a mob directed by your father," she wrote.

Eric Trump acknowledged his birthday with a post earlier in the evening, declaring, "Never thought I would have 150,000 people sing me happy birthday on the National Mall in Washington D.C!"

Tiffany isn't the only Trump daughter being condemned for her online activity as the violence unfolded in the US Capitol.

Ivanka Trump swiftly deleted a tweet in which she referred to the pro-Trump mob as "American patriots" amid widespread criticism.

"American Patriots - any security breach or disrespect to our law enforcement is unacceptable," the First Daughter wrote.

"This violence must stop immediately. Please be peaceful."

Twitter users condemned Ivanka's choice of words, including actor George Takei who wrote: "You showed us who you are the first time, Ivanka."

"We were always told that @IvankaTrump was going to be the 'voice of reason' for her father. Instead, she's just as complicit," another commenter said.

Responding to a request to clarify her original post, Ivanka said: "Peaceful protest is patriotic. Violence is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms."
