'Tis the season to be jolly… grumpy? Christmas is almost here and nestled among the joy, goodwill and all-round happiness are the wonderful little nuggets of frustration that make us human.

Shopping

Of course, the one time of the year you get to shop guilt-free – OK, maybe a couple of things for yourself while you're there – is the one time you can't get in the door of your favourite shop because of all the fair-weather spenders. Deep breath.

The trick, of course, is to get everything done early. Like yesterday. Sorry, is that annoying?

That full-up feeling

Why, oh why, can't we eat as much delicious food as we want without feeling like we'd get stuck if we rolled over? Why does a few festive Proseccos nearly always mean a not-so-festive headache the next day?

It's one of the real tragedies of Christmas. We can have as much 'goodwill' as we want. Why can't we have as much cake? Ugh.

Family 'fun'

Whether it's movies, sports or something less important like federal politics, you can bet that Christmas gatherings will bring out more opinions than an episode of Q and A. And what's more, the thin line between discussion and disagreement can get even thinner at such a busy time of year. Buckle up.

Hot, hot heat

You wait twelve months for the big day, and set the table according to the advice of a stylist to the stars. The food is cooked, the drinks are cold, and everything is ready for an Instagrammable feast. And then a furnace-like blast reminds you why you don't do this every day.

Lunch in the sun turns into a race against melted thongs and scalded extremities.

But by March you'll have forgotten and you'll be looking forward to 'European-style outdoor dining' again.

But, let's be honest – you can't have the good without the gripes. After all, what would a holiday be if we couldn't let off some steam with a little light complaining? So, may we suggest getting the whinging out of your system early before sitting down to watch a movie with the family, and reminding yourself why you put yourself through it each year.

Even the Grinch really loves Christmas, underneath it all.
