Target shopper 'redecorates' store aisle in divisive video: 'So unnecessary'

A Target shopper in the US has sparked controversy by taking it upon herself to decorate an aisle in her local store.

Kelsey Venkov shared her home decorating tips on TikTok, but viewers were left divided when she chose to redecorate a Target store aisle.

In the video, Venkov says she was "minding her own business" in the store when she spotted a chair she felt inspired to decorate.

"I took it upon myself to decorate since all the décor was right there," she said in a voiceover.

"People might even get ideas from it, so why not… I don't know if anyone saw me but they would probably think I'm a crazy person."

Venkov even suggested Target could "sell more" if they hired a designer to help merchandise its products the way she did in the clip.

"Target, if you're watching this – I'm available and I'm your girl," she added.

Though the video was clearly made with good intentions, viewers were divided as some claimed she was making life harder for the actual Target employees.

Several people commented their frustrations, one writing: "As someone who works at Target, PLEASE don't do this. It makes our job so much harder."

"You've obviously never worked a retail job," one commented, another adding: "Literally just decorate your own house."

Other TikTok users defended Venkov, saying she was doing nothing wrong and hadn't damaged or misplaced any items while decorating.

"This is literally how stores merchandise stuff, why are you all so mad?" one person wrote.

It's true many stores display products in the way Venkov did in her video, laying out items in decorative merchandising displays to sell more products.

However, the difference is that these displays are designed and implemented by store employees, rather than shoppers.

Venkov later did a follow-up video where she returned to the Target to see if her 'decoration' had been removed.

In the clip, she pointed out she hadn't moved any items out of their designated section and revealed her chair display was still there.

She also rolled up a rug she had laid out and returned it to the shelf where she found it.

But some viewers still weren't happy, one commenting: "Don't be shy, put everything back."

"What you did was still unnecessary. You don't work at Target so you don't know what goes on behind the scenes," another added.

However, others defended Venkov, saying she didn't do anything wrong and people who were angry about the original clip were being "too sensitive".

One wrote: "You guys find anything to get mad about these days."

While some of the scandal has died down on Venkov's page, opinions on her decision to decorate the store remain divided.
