Can you really overcome the 'ick' once you see it? Nine hosts break it down

There's nothing worse than getting the 'ick' that sudden all-consuming feeling when someone does something that just makes you cringe.

It can be something as simple as being annoyed at how someone texts or wincing at the use of certain pet names.

No matter how hard you try, the 'ick' can feel impossible to shake.

We hear it everywhere in today's lingo, but what even is the ick really?

In this week's Talking Honey, 2GB's Ben Fordham, 9News presenter Georgie Gardner and Today Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkins joined host Shelly Horton to discuss.

The panel dove straight into some relationship 'icks' a reader had been dealing with, from attending a medieval fair to running after a bus or even wearing socks with sandals, before reflecting on some they'd come across in their own personal life.

Fordham recalled a moment of his own: "something I once did around Georgie Gardner" at an airport that he was encouraged to reconsider.

Wilkins says sometimes the 'ick' is just unexplainable.

"There are some people, you know, it's just something about them sort of annoys you," he said.

"And then once you kind of get the ick with them, then everything they do sort of annoys you," he explained.

But when it comes to getting over the 'ick', Horton revealed that from her own experience, it's possible "if it's the right person".

Horton has been married to her husband Darren Robinson since 2015 and shared how meeting her life partner changed one specific 'ick'.

"I had an ick when I was dating that I was very, very particular about spelling and grammar in text messages," she said.

The Talking Honey host admitted she hated abbreviations in texts until she began a relationship with her hubbie who is dyslexic.

"I didn't care about the spelling mistakes 'cos he's amazing."
