Do you know your worth?

So often when we talk about "worth", we might think about dollar signs. But in this context, I'm talking about your potential.

Negotiating your salary isn't just about money – it's about knowing your worth and making sure your boss does too.

And here's the thing: if you don't ask, you're far less likely to get what you deserve.

It's important to know your worth when negotiating a pay rise, says Sylvia Jeffreys.  Instagram

Let's talk numbers.

In Australia, the gender pay gap sits at 11.5 per cent, meaning women take home, on average, $231.50 less than men per week.

And despite Gen Z and Millennials being more open about salaries than any previous generation, women still negotiate pay rises less often than men – and when they do, they typically get smaller increases.

Enter Meggie Palmer, founder and CEO of PepTalkHer, an Aussie powerhouse helping women get what they actually deserve in their careers.

Meggie has spent years coaching women on how to walk into negotiations with confidence, ask for the money they should be earning and not back down when faced with a "no."

So, how do you negotiate like a pro?

Palmer swears by the 'Wish, Want, Walk' method – figure out your dream outcome (Wish), the middle ground you'll accept (Want), and the absolute lowest you'll go before you walk away (Walk).

While negotiating is super important, so is recognising and celebrating your wins.

Men tend to shout about their wins, while women often assume their hard work will "speak for itself." Spoiler alert: it won't.

Keep a running list of every goal you've smashed, every glowing email from your boss, and every time you've made the company look good.

That way when you're in the room, you're not just asking for more – you're proving you deserve more.

It's a huge part of why Meggie created the PepTalkHer app – a tracking tool to log every time you smash a target, bring in new business, or get positive feedback. When it's time for a raise, you'll have receipts.

Whether it's your salary, a job title or better flexibility, you deserve to ask for what you're worth. And if Meggie Palmer has taught us anything, it's that the only way to change the game is to play it – and play it well.
