For some, marriage looks a little different these days.

Plenty of people are opting out of changing their last name, many are choosing not to be "given away" at the end of the aisle, and some couples are choosing to keep a major part of their lives separate even after tying the knot.

On the latest episode of Talking Honey, Shelly Horton, Richard Wilkins, Deborah Knight and Jelena Dokic discussed combining finances in marriage and long-term relationships.

Knight, who hosts Money News on 2GB, 3AW, 4BC and 6PR, explains she thinks it's best to go "all in" to save things from getting complicated. But added there's no harm in having "a sneaky bank account on the side so you can buy your own stuff".

According to Wilkins, the main thing when it comes to money is communication.

"Be generous and nice and open," he says.

Aussie tennis great Jelena Dokic, however, points out it's truly different for every couple.

"I think you can talk it all through, like we've all had different opinions, but I think if you agree on something you can make it work," she explained.

"I think that should be a part of it where you're kind of like, 'It's joint, it's together it doesn't matter'. But sometimes you might [have a partner] who goes, 'I'll just pay for majority you just do whatever'".

"I don't know, I think, again, it's kind of very individual."

Despite their differing opinions, all agreed on one thing: communication is key.

"Money is this sort of taboo topic," says Knight.

"It still is you know, you don't ask people what they earn... At what point do you then have that discussion in a relationship?"
