There's a royal shift in store for Princess Anne and her family next month

With the expected arrival of Princess Eugenie's baby next month comes a royal shift for several royals, including Princess Anne and her family.

The birth of Eugenie's first child with husband Jack Brooksbank, reportedly due in February, will prompt a shuffle in the line to the throne.

Baby Brooksbank will place in the 11th position, behind his or her mother Eugenie, who is 10th.

While the 'top 10' order will remain unchanged, anyone placed lower in the succession line, including Prince Edward and Princess Anne and their respective families, will move down a spot.

Princess Anne will move from 14th to 15th, with her son Peter Phillips and his daughters Savannah and Isla shuffling to 16th, 17th and 18th.

Zara and her two daughters Mia and Lena will then become 19th, 20th and 21st in line. When Zara's third child is born this year, he or she will sit in spot 22.

Princess Anne famously opted against royal titles for her two children, however this didn't impact their placement in the line of succession.

Similarly, Prince Harry and son Archie remain in the line despite Harry and wife Meghan Markle having resigned as senior royals and declined a royal title for their firstborn.

It's believed Eugenie and Jack will also decline a title for their child.

The line of succession dates back to the 17th century, and is influenced by both descent and parliamentary statute.

Originally, the order of the line for the throne was determined by the Bill of Rights of 1681 and the Act of Settlement of 1701.

The stipulations laid out in these statutes have undergone some change in the centuries since, most recently in 2015 when the Succession to the Crown Act (2013) came into force.
